Obituary

Addie Jean Kyle, 87, of Indianapolis, Indiana, affectionately known as “Memaw,” passed away on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, leaving behind a family who loved her beyond measure.

Born August 12, 1939, in Versailles, Kentucky, Jean was the daughter of the late Thomas V. English and Minnie Lynch Smith English.

For nearly 52 years, Jean shared her life with her beloved husband, Thomas J. “Tom” Kyle. The two were truly peas in a pod, rarely seen without one another. Whether enjoying a quiet day at home with the cats, spending time with family, or heading out on a little adventure, they were happiest together.

Jean raised five children and remained a devoted source of love, encouragement, and support for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was everyone's biggest cheerleader, believing in their dreams, celebrating their accomplishments, and standing beside them through life's challenges. She had a way of making even the hardest days feel a little easier, simply by being there.

Jean's generosity extended to everyone around her. She remembered the little things that mattered to people, found thoughtful ways to brighten their days, and gave freely of her time. She listened without judgment and understood people in a way that made them feel completely at ease. With Jean, you never had to wonder whether you were loved. You could feel it in the way she treated you.

Jean found joy in life's simple pleasures. An impromptu trip to HomeGoods, an afternoon at the casino, a milkshake on the way home, or getting her nails done could make for a wonderful day. Ask if she wanted to go somewhere, and her answer was almost always, “Sure, I'm not doing anything!” Some of the best memories with Jean came from ordinary afternoons, simply because being with her made them special.

Jean loved flowers, especially roses, and always had them growing around her home. She delighted in choosing new flowers and placing them where she could admire them through her windows. When they began to wilt, she'd simply toss them “over the hill” and go buy more. Jean found happiness in these little things, filling her home with color, warmth, and the cheerful spirit that made it such a welcoming place.

Throughout her life, Jean was rarely far from family, often living right next door to her children and grandchildren. After several years in Florida, Jean and Tom returned to Indiana six years ago, settling next door to her granddaughter and her family. Their return brought more shared birthdays, holidays, family dinners, and spontaneous visits with the entire family. Those years together were an extraordinary gift.

Whenever family came to visit, Jean would stop what she was doing, sit down, and ask to hear everything about their lives. She celebrated their successes as though they were her own and carried their worries as though they belonged to her. No matter how much time had passed, she always wanted to know what was happening in the lives of those she loved.

Jean leaves behind her beloved husband, Thomas J. “Tom” Kyle; her children, Bill (Portia) McWhorter of Kokomo, Indiana, Brenda Bingamon of Hamilton, Ohio, Patsy McWhorter of East Bernstadt, Kentucky, Kathy Hoff of Harrison, Ohio, and David (Jasmine) McWhorter of East Bernstadt, Kentucky; and her stepchildren, Joe (Susan) Kyle of Cincinnati, Ohio, Kim Yost of Germantown, Kentucky, and Jesse (Elizabeth) Kyle of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Her legacy of love continues through her 21 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Jack English of North Santee, South Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her stepson, Andrew John Kyle; grandsons, Richard Allen Bailey II and Daniel Lakes; her parents, Thomas V. English and Minnie Lynch Smith English; her sisters, Ann Brock and Sue “Susie” English; and her brothers, Willis Smith, Jim English, Ray Smith, Ben English, and Tom English.

The loss of Jean is immeasurable. She was more than a wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was woven into the very fabric of her family's lives, a presence so constant and a love so unconditional that it is difficult to imagine a world without her. Her absence will be felt at every family gathering, in celebrations she would have loved, and in quiet moments when someone reaches for the phone to tell her something. Life will never feel quite the same without her.

Jean loved Jesus, and her family finds comfort in knowing she is now at peace in the loving arms of her Heavenly Father. Though her absence leaves an emptiness that cannot be filled, the love she gave so freely will remain with those she leaves behind.

What a beautiful gift it was to have had 87 years of Addie Jean Kyle.

Following cremation, a Graveside Burial Service will be held on Saturday, October 24th at 1 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, 8320 Moore Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46278.
