Carl Leslie Bruns, 83, Sunman, died Wednesday, March 7, 2012.Survivors include his wife, Viola (Neukam) Bruns, Sunman; sons Byron (Carol) Bruns, Sunman, and Mark (Barbara) Bruns, Cincinnati; grandchildren Scott (Lesley), Craig (Kimm), Leslie (Alex Trakas) and Blake Bruns; and great-grandchildren Drew, Lauren, Madeline and Nolan Carl Bruns. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Robert and Earl Bruns.Born June 3, 1928, in Sunman, he was the son of Alvin and Catherine (Ratheiser) Bruns. He was employed and co-owner of Nedderman's Feed Store, Sunman, for 47 years; superintendent of Sunman utilities for many years; a member of Sunman Fire Department from 1949-2012; and fire chief for 25 years. He was the 1977-78 Kenneth L. Diver American Legion Post 377 Firefighter of the Year, Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association district chairman 1971-81 and IVFA vice president 1981-82. He received the IVFA President's Award in 1983; was IVFA president 1983-84; received the Indiana Department of Fire and Prevention and Building Safety Award 1983-85; was the 1984 Kenneth L. Diver American Legion Post 337 Man of the Year; received the Sagamore of the Wabash, which was presented by Indiana Gov. Robert Orr in 1984; was named state of Indiana honorary secretary in 1985, was IVFA board chairman 1985-86; was 1988 Mr. IVFA; received the 1994 Sunman Area Chamber of Commerce Community Appreciation Award; received the 1996 Indiana Governor's Award for Meritorious Service; received the Ripley County Fire Chief Association Recognition for 25 years of service in 1996; received the IVFA 50 years of service recognition in 1999 and was the 2002 SACC Citizen of the Year. The Sunman Community Church and IVFA lifetime member was also inducted into the Ripley County Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007, was a member of the Ripley County Council for four years and organized and implemented the Enhanced 911 emergency service.His favorite quotation was "When the one great scorer comes to write against your name, he writes not only if you won or lost, but how you played the game." Visitation is Sunday, March 11, from 1-7 p.m. followed by an IVFA memorial service at the American Legion post, 412 Eastern Ave., Sunman.
