David Henry
Cook
June 27, 1944 – January 26, 2026
It is with great sadness that the family of David "Dave" Henry Cook, 81, of Brookville, Indiana, announces his passing on January 26, 2026. Dave was born in Batesville on June 27, 1944, to the late Howard and Sarah (née Franke) Cook. He was a devoted father who held a deep and abiding love for his community.
Dave moved to Brookville in 1965, where he began a lifelong career alongside his parents as owner and operator of the Brookville branch of Cook Funeral Home. Together, they also continued to operate the family's original location in Sunman. While serving as a business owner, Dave simultaneously began what would become a lifetime of service as a volunteer, leader, coach, and mentor throughout Franklin County.
Dave worked alongside countless community members to help establish and support essential services and programs. He was a founding member of the local EMS, a longtime president and dedicated supporter of the 4-H program and fair board, an active member of the Whitewater Canal Byway, a volunteer at the Rileybrook Art Center, and the longtime voice of the Franklin County High School Wildcat basketball program, and the list could go on and on, his impact on Brookville and the surrounding community cannot be overstated. Dave's commitment to service extended well beyond the local level through his involvement in professional organizations, including the Indiana Funeral Directors Association (INFDA), where he served in numerous roles including president, and the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) where he again served in numerous roles.
Dave is survived by his two daughters, Alicia (Blake) Smith and Adrianne (Joe) Dirkhising; his son, Adam (Kelly) Cook; and his seven grandchildren, Corin (Tim) Glavan, Doria Smith, Henry Dirkhising, John Dirkhising, Jolene Dirkhising, Camden Cook, and Everson Cook. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Sarah Cook; his brother, Roger Cook; and his sister, Harriet Bouchillon.
Visitation for Dave will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2026, from 4 until 8 p.m. at the Franklin County Farmers Mutual Expo Hall, 11225 County Park Road, Brookville, Indiana 47012. Visitation will continue Friday, January 30, 2026, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. at Cook Funeral Home, 929 Main Street, Brookville. Burial will follow in St. Michael's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Franklin County 4-H Program, the Franklin County High School Athletic Department, the Franklin County Community Foundation, or to the Whitewater Canal Byway. Donations will be accepted in person at the visitation, or they can be mailed to 929 Main Street, Brookville, Indiana 47012.
