On March 27, 2014, Lela Jean Brown, Cedar Grove, lost her long battle with illness. She was 85. Jean was born on August 13, 1928 in Batesville, Indiana, a daughter of the late Otto and Geneva (Dickman) Johnson. She graduated from Batesville High School and after marrying Donald Brown in 1949, they settled in Cedar Grove, where Don ran Brown Lumber Company. Jean was a loving wife, mother, and homemaker. She loved socializing, canoeing on the Whitewater, cooking, needle point, knitting, and crocheting. Also, Jean often served on her high school graduating class reunions. She also enjoyed participating with the Red Hatters. But, Jean's greatest pleasure was her family. She loved planning and hosting family events. Prior to marriage she was a waitress at the Sherman House and Hillcrest Country Club and for many years was the bookkeeper for Brown Lumber Company. Jean is survived by her husband, Donald Brown; children, David Brown (partner: Linda Kaiser) of Indianapolis, Steve (wife: Pam) Brown of Shelbyville, Tom Brown of Cedar Grove, Bruce Brown (partner: Ann Webb) of Napierville, IL and Jill (husband: Scott) Keller of Pendleton; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a sister, Lenita Barcus of Houston, Texas. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Johnson. A Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 2nd beginning at 7:00 PM at Cook Funeral Home. Officiating will be Chaplain Brad Grinnen of The Hospice Group of Indianapolis. Visitation for Jean's family and friends will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Funeral Home.
