Obituary

Mary K. Strohmier, 88, of Brookville, Indiana, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at Hospice of Cincinnati – Blue Ash.

Mary was born on August 17, 1938, the cherished daughter of Robert and Pauline Burkhart (née Reuter). She was a proud graduate of Brookville High School, Class of 1956. Shortly after graduating, she married the love of her life, Alan Strohmier, on September 13, 1958, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Brookville. Together, they built a family and a life filled with love and joy. Although Mary held a few jobs throughout the years, her proudest role was that of a homemaker. She devoted herself to her family, always putting their needs before her own.

Mary loved gardening and working in her yard, whether she was pulling weeds, digging up perfectly good flowers and plants to make room for something new, crawling around on her hands and knees to pull dandelions, or even trimming the driveway with a pair of scissors. She enjoyed yard work so much that Alan often had to call her in for supper. Mary also loved tending to the cows, especially feeding them the grass clippings near the clothesline, which may have left a little something extra on the freshly washed clothes hanging nearby. She was rarely one to sit still, and when she wasn’t mowing the yard, she could usually be found cleaning the house or planning her next remodeling project, always ready for a change.

Mary enjoyed watching her daily soap operas, which were not to be interrupted by anyone, not even her beloved husband, Alan. In more recent years, she even developed a newfound appreciation for watching baseball and football on television, despite having spent years disliking both. Mary was known for her pleasant disposition and ability to maintain a positive attitude, no matter what life brought her way. She was also a loving and devoted caretaker to Alan, faithfully looking after him and tending to his needs as he faced health challenges of his own. The care and dedication she showed her husband were a testament to the deep love she had for him.

Above all, Mary was the very best “Mom Mop” to her grandchildren and, especially, her great-grandchildren. She loved spending time with them, playing alongside them, and even joining in a game of soccer. Halloween was another favorite holiday, and Mary and Alan enjoyed dressing up together and sneaking over to knock on their grandchildren’s windows to give them a playful surprise and get them into the Halloween spirit. Her playful nature, unwavering devotion to her family, and zest for life made her a special presence in the lives of all who knew and loved her.

Those surviving who will carry Mary’s Legacy forward include her husband of over 68 years, Alan Strohmier; three children, Nadine (Steve) Simmermeyer, Tamara Schmid, David (Glenda) Strohmier; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Strohmier; eight grandchildren, Damien (Glenda) Strohmier, Sam Strohmier, Drew (Sam) Simmermeyer, Celena (Aaron) Kaiser, Brayden (Ashli) Strohmier, Katie (Josh) Morgan, Lindsey (Zach) Alcorn, and Cory Strohmier; eight great-grandchildren, Westin, Lucia, Ellis, Arlen, Baleigh, Grayson, Hazel, and Rowan; five siblings, Sr. Andre Burkhart, OSF, Chuck (Pam) Burkhart, Linda (Dewey) Grocox, John (Geraldine) Burkhart, and Debbie (Jim) Pierce; and one brother-in-law, Charlie Allen. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by one son, Eddie Strohmier; four siblings, Bill Burkhart, Dorothy Burkhart, Donald Burkhart, and Betty Allen, as well as five siblings-in-law, Myrna Strohmier, Dale Strohmier, Jane Miller, Mildred Gessell, and Lloyd Smith.
