Walter "Jack" Allen, 88, of Brookville, Indiana died Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at the Brookville Healthcare Center.He was born in Franklin County, Indiana on March 6, 1922 to Jesse and Margaret (Hensley) Allen.He married Lura Hyde on February 25, 1954 at the St. Michael Rectory in Brookville, Indiana.Jack was a 1941 graduate of Brookville High School. He then served in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II. After the military he worked briefly for the telephone company in the Laurel area. He then began working as an electrical power-lineman which took him to Saudi Arabia for four and a half years. He built and ran the Mound Haven Motel from 1956 to 1975. He aslo managed the Brookville Flea Market from 1984 until 2006. Jack was a member of the Laurel Masonic Lodge #447 F & AM for 63 years. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, and a member of Brookville American Legion's Bernard Hurst Post #77. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Lura P. Allen, of Brookville; three sons, Michael (Barbara) Allen of Westfield, Indiana, Mark (Julee) Allen of Cynthiana, Kentucky, and Robert (Angela) Allen of Brookville; two daughters, Mary (Don) Race of Frankfort, Illinois, and Debra (Terry) Turner of Markleville, Indiana; 13 grandchildren, including Jamie Race Munsell, Crystal Race, Lindsay Allen, Brittany Allen, Katie Allen, Derrick Turner, Christa Turner, Jackie Turner, Megan Allen, Patrick Allen, Lauren Allen, Shelby Allen, and June Allen; two step-grandchildren, Mahto and Charlie Fast Horse; seven great-grandchildren, Harper, Sutton, Gannon, Ryder, Jordan, Jeremy, & Isabella; and one brother, Phillip Allen of Harrison, Ohio.In addition to his Parents, Jesse & Margaret Allen, he was preceded in death by an infant son; one brother, Woodrow Allen; and five sisters, Dora Barnes, Anna Blake, Martha Taylor, Daisy White, and Virginia Townsend.The visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, October 15, 2010 with Masonic Services at 7:00 PM at Cook Funeral Home, 929 Main Street, Brookville, Indiana 47012. The funeral will be Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 11:00 AM at the Funeral Home. Rev. Wayne Ison, Pastor of the Metamora Church of God, will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Michael Cemetery with Rev. C. Ryan McCarthy, Pastor of St. Michael Church in Brookville, officiating graveside committal services. Graveside military funeral honors will be provided by Brookville American Legion's Bernard Hurst Post #77, United States Marine Corp Funeral Honor Guard, and Trumpeter and family friend, Danny Price, playing Taps.Pallbearers will be Robert Allen, Michael Allen, Patrick Allen, Derrick Turner, Donald Race, and Terry Turner.Memorial donations may be directed to St. Michael Church, 145 St. Michael Blvd., Brookville, Indiana, 47012; St. Michael School 354 High Street, Brookville, Indiana 47012; or the Metamora Church of God, 20152 U.S. Hwy 52, Laurel, Indiana 47024.
